Industrial Hygiene Coordinator (10/28/08)

Selected candidate will report to the Industrial Hygiene Manager and will develop, implement and manage various industrial hygiene programs with primary responsibility for the University’s Employee Exposure Monitoring, Respiratory Protection and Ergonomics programs. Other responsibilities include conducting industrial hygiene audits and grant reviews, advising biological and radiation safety committees, maintenance and calibration of industrial hygiene equipment. This position will also serve as a member of the university’s spill response team.

Excellent written and oral communication skills with competence in computers are required. Experience with computer database/spreadsheet applications (M.S. Excel/Access) and Word is desired. Requires good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision. Requires a B.S./B.A. in an environmental, chemical, industrial hygiene, engineering or related science discipline and 2 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene activities with sound knowledge of OSHA requirements and consensus standards. Master’s degree, applicable professional certification and experience in a university environment are desired.

Salary Range: $43,000-$58,000.

Background: This position is a full-time exempt position supporting the Plymouth, North Carolina lumber facility within the iLevel Softwood Lumber Business. Plymouth Lumber is a part of the Atlantic Lumber region located in northeastern North Carolina. The Plymouth Safety Manager serves as the primary site resource to ensure all safety expectations are met for the manufacturing site. This individual provides leadership, coordination and technical expertise in all areas of safety, health, and industrial hygiene compliance to achieve excellence. This position will have the accountability for establishing reliable methods for improving safety performance; nourishing a culture in which safety is an overriding value in all activities and in which every associate assumes accountability for safety; and assuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.

A key member of the site Lead Team, this position reports to the Mill Manager, with responsibilities to the Regional Safety Manager.

Key Functions: The essence of this role requires a highly motivated, people-oriented person for the proactive, practical application of safety commitment to the operation and to the day-to-day behaviors of all associates. This individual will provide leadership in developing, implementing and managing safety policies, procedures, practices, and projects.

Accountabilities may include, but are not limited to:

Responds to & participates in the investigation of safety incidents and interacts with the designated Emergency Response Team
Develops an effective communication process to make safety priorities and performance visible
Coaches and works with mill leadership to be a visible role model of incident prevention and safe work practices
Provides technical support for on-going problem solving and safety investigations
Ensures systems are in place for an effective safety program while maintaining compliance with regulatory/corporate guidelines, applicable record keeping, reporting, safety statistics and trend analysis
Serves as a primary contact for all corporate & regulatory agency requests and inquiries
Involves & engages associates in developing an associate-driven safety program, to include safety processes and performance measures
Provides leadership to safety steering team
Provides on-the-floor safety coaching and recognition
Assists with implementation and support of area Safety Team responsibilities

The following qualifications are required:

High School Diploma/General Education Degree (GED) with minimum 6 years related experience OR Associate’s Degree with minimum 4 years related experience OR Bachelor’s Degree or higher with minimum 1 year related experience
Passion for safety as demonstrated by a strong commitment to associate safety
Understands safety compliance auditing process and ability to complete an internal audit/review
Technical expertise in safety to include regulatory requirements, OSHA record keeping, workers compensation, and industrial hygiene regulations
Experience in Safety Incident Investigations
Knowledge of chemical and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) systems management
Ability to develop and effectively deliver safety training
Project management skills to include the ability to develop and implement safety processes
Strong, engaging, people-centered leadership style
Proactive, assertive and ability to work with a sense of urgency

Principle Responsibilities:

Work on projects tied to critical value streams: Assess and map current state, initiate and execute projects to achieve future state Lean Six Sigma objectives
Complete two to four projects annually, delivering $400k - $800k annual productivity savings by completing projects tied directly to Operating Income or Inventory improvement
Lead a minimum of 6-9 kaizens per year focused on eliminating variation/defects/waste
Mentor 2-3 green belt candidates per year from project creation through completion, delivering a minimum of $50k in savings per project
Partner with the Lean Six Sigma Manager and Staff level managers in the development of the project pipeline for the facility

Problem Solving:

Example #1: Your facility is losing $1.5 million per year in metal scrap and is not aware of a potential fix/improvement. This role would need to understand the problem, determine root causes, develop and implement a solution, and sustain improvements in excess of $200K
Example #2: The facility's inventory turns are below objective level. Prioritize and map critical value streams to identify project opportunities and execute projects to achieve inventory improvement objectives inside current plan year

Knowledge:

Minimum B.S. degree in Mfg Engineering, Operations or Business
Masters Degree in Mfg Engineering, Operations or Business preferred
Min. Yrs. Experience: 5 - 7 years of related operations or lean six sigma experience required, in a manufacturing environment preferred
Must have Black Belt certification or must complete requirements for certification within the first 12 months on the job
Must have above average understanding of Six Sigma methodology, tools, and philosophy
